Bloody great pictures RUSS, enjoyed every one. I remember going to London on the steam train, the carriages had a corridor on one side and seating was six seats, very comfortable, not the plastic crap you sit on now. Above each seat was a picture and then above that was the luggage storage. The door window could be lowered and raised with a leather strap.Near where I lived was a park alongside which ran the railway high up on an embankment. I remember the steam trains going by and the smoke would fall down the embankment onto us. Sometimes one of the crew would wave.

Hi Malc,
It was interesting looking around the museum, from the outside looking in the third class carriages looked to be better than the first class carriages of today. I can also remember the carriages you are talking about, they were actually called "side corridor" and to be honest they made a lot more sense as people wandering off to the toilet and the buffet car etc didn't disturb the other passengers like they do nowadays.
I can still remember the steam trains as a kid but they were being phased out in the mid sixties and by the end of the sixties they were all but gone.
With Wendy working for the railway's since 1991 i have got to go on quite a few trips over the years with a few VIP trips thrown in aswell.
Wendy started when it was still British Rail so has still got one of the original employment contracts, fortunately before it was privitised someone had the sense to get the original contracts "Red Ringed" or "Ring Fenced" which means they can't be taken away from you and have to be honoured by any future company's that take over. As a result of time served and promotions over the years Wendy gets free 1st class travel to and from work plus free 1st class leisure travel anywhere in the UK with all/any of the railway company's. In this respect i am also lucky as Wendy is far enough up the food chain for spouse's to qualify, so i also get free 1st class leisure travel anywhere in the UK, not that i use it very often to be honest.
Cheers.
Russ.

Used to use the train regularly for a 20 min journey to Salisbury in the mid eighties for about 2 years. It was on the Waterloo/Exeter line which was single track between Salisbury to Yeovil. It seemed that line would get all the old leftovers rolling stock but sometimes we would get to sit in decommissioned 1st class carriages with the side corridor and comfy wide seats with built in ashtray in the arm rests. Al this was pulled by a smokey diesel class 50 or something similar. Being an art student at the time I got to practice some of my work on the walls... Dom
